My husband and I recently purchased a leather sectional and I couldn’t wait to stage the perfect scene for when guests walk through the door. Of course I wanted our front room to be comfortable and relaxing, but I also needed my couch to make a statement. A great friend of mine accompanied me as I searched for the perfect pillows. We searched tediously for the right color, pattern, and size. After what felt like a dozen stores I threw in the towel and said, “Forget it, I just won’t decorate with pillows on the couch.” Then I realized, if I can’t find what I want, why don’t I make it? So I took a trip to the fabric store and discovered these awesome fabrics! An average decorative pillow costs between $10 – $30 each depending on the style, size, and fabric. By making my own pillows, I paid less than $25 for a total of 4 decorative pillows including the fabric, pillow forms, and zippers!
In case you would like to make decorative pillows for your home:
I predetermined that I wanted a total of 4 decorative couch pillows. Also, I predetermined the sizes (length and width) of the pillows I was going to make; I wanted two matching larger pillows measuring 24″ x 24″ and two smaller matching pillows measuring 16″ x 16″. I found the fabrics for my pillows at my local Hancock Fabrics at an incredible price! I purchased 1/2 yard of the light brown faux leather for less than $3.00 and 1-1/2 yards of the aztec fabric for less than $5.00. Fortunately, the pillow forms were 60% off. I purchased two 24″ x 24″ pillow forms and two 16″ x 16″ pillow forms. I prefer pillow forms, but batting would work as well as the stuffing for your pillows (batting is also a slightly cheaper alternative). I also purchased two zippers to have a zipper enclosure for my two light brown faux leather pillows; I intended on hand-sewing the closure on my larger pillows.
